Home “intruder” was actually a boyfriend

October 24, 2021

homeowner fraud

A homeowner reported waking in the middle of the night to an intruder. A fight ensued and the intruder fled with over $6,000 in personal property, breaking two windows. The insured acknowledged recognizing the suspect as a prior renter. The suspicious incident was referred to IS as a possible case of homeowner policy fraud.

Investigators interviewed a roommate who saw the suspect and insured fighting, with the suspect running away empty-handed. In fact, the witness said the suspect spent the night there, as he is the insured’s boyfriend. Using his smart phone with a camera, the witness took photos from the living room, after the date of loss, showing one of the items the insured claimed were stolen.

The investigator confronted the insured with the evidence. “Never mind, I don’t want to pursue a claim,” said the insured. We’ll see if the DOI Fraud Division decides to pursue it on their end.
